The Penn FTD Center is dedicated to pursuing pharmaceutical trials designed to alleviate or treat some of the symptoms associated with neurodegenerative conditions. Clinical treatment trials involve the administration of an investigational drug or a placebo to eligible participants to assess how the study drug may affect thinking or behavior. Each participant’s health is monitored throughout the course of the study via routine clinical blood tests, MRIs, and ECGs to ensure that risk from the study drug is minimized. The investigational agent is provided by a pharmaceutical company, which sponsors the treatment trial. Procedures, materials, and examinations associated with the trial are provided at no cost to eligible participants. We also perform preclinical trial studies to identify the best methods for monitoring responses to a treatment. This may include neuropsychological measures, MRI studies, blood tests or lumbar puncture.
